FAQ

General

Do I need Google Analytics for UTM Manager to work?

No. UTM Manager is fully self-contained — capture, storage, and reporting all happen inside your WordPress site. You can run it alongside GA without conflict; they read the same UTM parameters independently.

Which UTM parameters are tracked?

All six standard parameters (utm_id, utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, utm_content), each individually toggleable in Settings. Custom parameters like gclid and fbclid are supported via Pro or the developer filter — see Tracking Parameters.

Does it work with my theme / page builder?

Yes. Tracking is theme-agnostic: a small script is added to every front-end page automatically and doesn’t touch your layout or styles.

Performance

Will it slow down my site?

No. The tracker is a deferred script that reports in the background (navigator.sendBeacon) after the page has loaded. No tracking work happens during page rendering — server-side or client-side.

Does it work with caching plugins?

Yes — this is a core design goal. Capture happens in the visitor’s browser, so full-page caches (WP Rocket, W3 Total Cache, LiteSpeed, Cloudflare, Varnish) don’t break it. Plugins that capture during PHP page load record nothing on cached hits; UTM Manager records every view.

Data & attribution

What’s the difference between first-touch and last-touch?

First touch is the campaign that originally brought a visitor to your site — stored once, never changed. Last touch is the campaign on their most recent tagged visit — refreshed each return. Both are kept per lead, so you can credit discovery and re-engagement separately.

Does a visit without UTM parameters erase attribution?

Never. Untagged visits add to the lead’s journey and visit count but leave both attribution sets untouched.

How are returning visitors recognized?

Through a random first-party ID stored in a one-year cookie and localStorage. Same browser → same lead. Different device or cleared cookies → a new lead (standard limitation of cookie-based tracking).

Are visitors identified by IP address?

No. IPs are never used for identity and never stored raw — only a salted, irreversible hash, which can be disabled entirely. See Privacy & GDPR.

How do leads get an email address?

When a visitor is logged in to WordPress during a visit, their account email and user ID attach to their lead automatically — and are never overwritten afterwards. Pro form integrations can attach emails from form submissions.

Administration

Can I exclude administrators from tracking?

Yes, with one filter — see Developer Hooks:

add_filter( 'utmm_enable_tracking', function ( $enabled ) {
    return current_user_can( 'manage_options' ) ? false : $enabled;
} );

Can I export my data?

Yes — CSV export with date-range filtering and field selection under UTM Manager → Tools. See CSV Export.

What happens to my data if I deactivate or delete the plugin?

Deactivating stops tracking but keeps all data. Deleting the plugin permanently removes everything — tables, options, and legacy records. Export first if you need a backup.

Will updating from 1.x lose my leads?

No. Legacy leads are migrated automatically in the background into the new storage. Each original record is removed only after its replacement is confirmed written, leaving your database clean. The migration is one-way, so take a backup before updating if you may want to downgrade. See Migrating from Version 1.x.

Pro

What does UTM Manager Pro add?

Custom parameter tracking (any query key, not just the standard six), a Reports screen with selectable date ranges and country/device breakdowns, Contact Form 7 and WPForms integrations that turn visitors into named leads, WooCommerce revenue attribution, webhooks, a read-only REST API, geolocation and device data, extra CSV columns, and GDPR retention controls with a UI. See Pro Features or the plugin page.

Do I need to uninstall the free plugin to use Pro?

No — the opposite. Pro is an add-on that runs on top of the free plugin, so UTM Manager must stay installed and active. Install Pro alongside it and activate your license. See License Activation.

Will I lose data when I activate Pro?

No. Pro reads and extends the same tables the free plugin already writes to. Every existing lead, journey, and attribution value stays exactly where it is — Pro features simply start applying to them.

What happens if my Pro license expires?

Pro features switch off and you stop receiving updates, but nothing is deleted. The free plugin keeps tracking normally, and renewing plus clicking Check License brings everything back.

Can I track Google Ads gclid or Facebook fbclid?

Yes, with Pro. Add the key under Settings → Custom Parameters and it’s captured from then on — no change to your ad URLs, since the platforms append those parameters themselves. See Custom Parameters.

Can I see which campaign produced actual revenue?

Yes, with Pro and WooCommerce. Order totals are attributed to the buyer’s lead, and Revenue becomes an exportable column — export it alongside UTM Campaign and pivot on the campaign. See Integrations.

Can I send leads to my CRM or Zapier?

Yes, with Pro webhooks: HMAC-signed JSON events fire when a lead is identified or converts. There’s also a read-only REST API for pulling leads on your own schedule. See Integrations.
