Tags are the segmentation system in Send Emails. Instead of maintaining separate lists, you keep one contact database and label people with as many tags as you like — newsletter, customer, lead-magnet-a, event-2026. Campaigns and automations then target by tag.
Creating and managing tags
Go to Send Emails → Tags:
- Add Tag — give it a name (the slug is generated automatically and must be unique) and an optional description so future-you remembers what it’s for.
- Edit a tag to rename it — every contact carrying it updates instantly, since contacts reference the tag rather than storing its text.
- Delete one or more tags — this removes the label from all contacts but never deletes the contacts themselves.
Assigning tags to contacts
Tags get onto contacts in five ways:
- Manually — on the contact form, type to pick existing tags or create new ones inline.
- During CSV import — apply tags to everyone in the file. See Importing & Exporting.
- From forms — each form integration can assign default tags to every submission, so your contact form feeds newsletter while your download form feeds lead-magnet-a.
- From your store — the WooCommerce & EDD integrations tag synced customers.
- By automation — the add tag and remove tag steps let automations move people between segments based on behavior.
Using tags to target
- Campaigns — choose one or more tags as the recipient audience instead of all subscribers; the recipient count preview updates live.
- Automations — the tag added trigger starts a sequence the moment a tag lands on a contact, and has tag / doesn’t have tag conditions gate any automation.
Tagging strategy that works
- Tag by source (
form:footer,imported-2026) so you know where people came from. - Tag by interest (
woocommerce-tips,agency) so you can send relevant campaigns instead of blasting everyone. - Tag by lifecycle (
lead, customer, vip) and let automations move contacts along — for example, an order-placed automation that removesleadand addscustomer. - Prune unused tags occasionally; a tidy tag list keeps campaign targeting obvious.
